Chapter Seven

As Jalen lay there sore from head to toe, he thought of why he’d run from Houston. He turned over and tapped Zeke on his shoulder. “You asleep?”

Zeke lay on his back, his breathing even and his mouth closed. He didn’t make a sound when he slept.

“You asleep?” Jalen ran his fingers through Zeke’s beard. He liked how it scratched under his fingers.

Slowly, Zeke’s eyelids opened, revealing those sexy, brown eyes. He nipped at Jalen’s fingers. “Am now.” He curled to his side and pulled Jalen toward him. “I must not have fucked you properly. You should be in a coma by now.”

“And I would be, but there’s something I need to talk to you about.” Jalen wiggled until he was free of Zeke’s hold.

“Can’t it wait till morning, Ma?” Zeke yawned, then stretched. The cover slipped from his midsection, revealing a beautiful, bare hip. Jalen’s teeth ached to bite him.

“I want to tell you why I ran from Houston,” Jalen said. “And I’m not afraid to admit I’m more than scared to tell you.”

That got Zeke’s attention. If what Zeke had said was true, that they would be together forever, then Jalen wanted to start off with a clean slate, no secrets between them. He’d forced the memory back so often that he was afraid to recall that night. It haunted him in his dreams and was never too far from his mind.

Zeke ran a hand down Jalen’s back. “I’m listening, Cupcake.”

The endearment made Jalen think of when Zeke had licked the frosting off—

Concentrate!

“If I tell you, you have to promise me not to breathe a word to anyone else.” Jalen chewed his lower lip. “My life depends on it.”

Skin wrinkling between his dark eyes, Zeke pushed himself into a sitting position. “I promise not to tell anyone who would use the information against you.”

“That’s not what I said.”

Zeke let out a sigh. “If I need my pack’s help, Cupcake, then I’m gonna tell them what’s going on. You can trust them with your life. I have for the past sixteen decades, and none of them have betrayed me yet.”

“Dude, seriously, you can’t drop a bomb like that in my lap as if you’re talking about the weather. Jeez.” Jalen scrubbed a hand over his head. “I’m still trying to accept the fact that you can change into a wolf, and that you freaking bit me. Give me time to absorb that before you hit me with how old you are.” Jalen rubbed at his temple. “I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that everyone in the house is a wolf.”

“You’d be correct.”

Jalen’s head started to hurt. “I’m gonna save that information for later, when I’m awake enough to have a meltdown.”

Zeke’s eyes crinkled with laughter. “Go on. What did you need to tell me?”

“Last week—”

“Last week?”

“Stop interrupting me,” Jalen complained. “Yes, last week. I was at a friend’s house, just hanging out. I was drunk as shit, and for some reason, I thought it a good idea to go outside to take a leak.
